What is PDRN?
Polydeoxyribonucleotide. Aren't you glad they abbreviated it to PDRN? Me too. This ingredient was on the rise last year and still is, for good reason. But what is it? How does it work? Is it only available in beauty treatments? Let’s chat about it.
What actually is PDRN and what does it do?
A powerful skin-healing ingredient that is found in the DNA of salmon sperm - yes I mean the fish and yes you read that right.
It has an amazing ability to repair the skin. Fun fact, PDRN was originally used in the medical world for tissue regeneration and wound healing.
The beauty industry caught on to its abilities and that’s why we are hearing about it more and seeing it in skincare products.
You might be thinking why fish DNA? Well it is structurally similar to human DNA and this in turn allows PDRN to penetrate deep into the skin and activate a whole host of benefits such as collagen production, hydration, skin repair and improved elasticity.
So say hello to more radiant, firmer and younger looking skin.
Top 3 benefits of PDRN
Enables skin repair - fixes damaged cells, reduces redness & irritation and is effective at healing acne scars.
Provides hydration - boots moisture levels in the skin and gives the skin a nice dewy and plump complexion.
It’s anti-aging - through stimulating collagen production, in turn it helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improves the skin’s texture and boosts firmness.
How and what PDRN is used for?
Essentially it can be used for treating the entire face and your neck. However, one of the most sought after areas to tackle with PDRN, is the under eye area. This is because of how well PDRN performs and its effectiveness in reducing the appearance of under eye bags.
The area is known to develop wrinkles and fine lines much earlier than other areas of the face. PDRN can also be used to tackle the lack of elasticity in other facial regions such as the jawline, forehead and smile lines.
So how is PDRN used? A popular way of using this ingredient is in facial treatments. A micro-needling technique is used to infuse PDRN deep into the skin. This stimulates collagen production and cell renewal resulting in smoother and plumper skin.
Does it hurt? Well it’s probably not the most comfortable due to the needling but from what I have seen, the results are worth it. PDRN can also now be found in skincare, so we can apply it topically because let's face it, we might not always be able to afford these facial treatments.
What do I think?
I purchased Medicube’s PDRN Pink Peptide Serum and their PDRN Pink Collagen Gel Mask and let me start by saying, the mask gives such a glow after using it!
You leave it on for 1-3 hours, letting it go from pink to translucent and patting in any remaining essence. I only have 1 mask left and will definitely be buying more.
I have recently started to incorporate the PDRN serum into my skincare routine and so far so good, it is leaving my skin more hydrated and plump.
I am combining it with VT Reedle Shot 100 because this product uses micro-sized particles which resemble needles to create very small channels in my skin, allowing active ingredients to penetrate deeper.
Alexa Tip 💡
If, like me, the facial treatments aren't always affordable, incorporating PDRN into your routine is a great option and it’s working really well for me, I am already starting to see the benefits.
PDRN conclusion
Do I think PDRN is here to stay? Yes I do, I think we will start to see it in more products across more brands and I am here for it!
I love a new discovery that gets added into the skincare world and PDRN has earned its spot.
