What is Ectoin?
An ingredient that is making waves very early on this year is Ectoin, in fact I believe it started making waves towards the end of 2024 but now I am seeing more products with this ingredient in and more chatter about it. Have you heard of it? I hadn’t until 2 months ago, let’s dig in.
What actually is Ectoin and what does it do?
Ectoin is the new kid on the block in the skincare world, I heard of it about 3 weeks ago, that’s how new.
However, the ingredient itself has been around for a long time. So to understand what it is and what it does, we need to break it down, like a little science lesson if you will.
Ectoin is an extremolyte and what's that you ask? It's a small group of molecules that work to fight off dehydration and help organisms. It helps things like plants to survive in conditions like deserts.
You’re thinking what does that have to do with skin? Well it brings the same benefits to your skin. It gives the skin a protective shield, defends against environmental stressors and at the same time locking in moisture and strengthening the skin barrier.
Top 3 benefits of Ectoin
Texture - helps smooth out any uneven texture by supporting the skin’s barrier.
Redness - works to help soothe the skin if there is any irritation or sensitivity..
Hydration - a powerhouse that locks in moisture to keep the skin soft and plump.
How and what Ectoin is used for?
Ectoin is super-hydrating but it doesn’t just hydrate, it has protective benefits as well. It also offers anti-inflammatory effects, whilst improving the skin’s texture.
This is why some may view this ingredient as an all rounder, as it can deal with multiple skin concerns.
You can start waving bye bye to the appearance of any fine lines or wrinkles.
The ingredient can now be found in a variety of skincare products, I have seen it as a serum, sunscreen, eye cream - to name a few!
What do I think?
I have only just started using, I mean literally yesterday, an eye cream that has Ectoin in it. So very soon, I'll have a product review of it and I can then form a well rounded opinion. First impressions though, very hydrating.
Ectoin conclusion
I appreciate an ingredient that can essentially act as a bodyguard to my skin by protecting it from things like blue light, UVA rays and pollution on a cellular level.
Those things are ✔️ from me. Excited to see how this ingredient continues to perform!
