Tula skincare review

TULA skincare is a brand I hadn’t heard of until about 3 months ago. I picked up their bestsellers on the go travel kit to give a few of their most popular products a go - I’m always down to try a new brand! The name reminds me of Toulla from the film My BIg Fat Greek Wedding - I love her. But do I love Tula skincare?

Founded in 2014 by gastroenterologist, Dr.Roshini Raj, who was intrigued by the power of probiotics within wellness and beauty. TULA believes that ingredients that are good for your body can also be good for your skin. This explains why probiotics are at the core of the product ingredients. Fun fact - TULA means ‘balance’ in Sanskrit.

We believe that the same type of ingredients which are good for your body are also great for your skin. We focus on being healthy, not perfect & on empowering everyone to feel confident in their skin.

In addition to their belief, 100% of their products are created with probiotic extracts and superfoods and they are cruelty free - which we always love! The products in this kit do have fragrance which I am not a fan of sometimes but some of you may appreciate a nice smell. I personally would like fragrance-free options. I don’t really get irritated by fragrances in products, I just don’t particularly like them. If a product I love has a fragrance that my nostrils really don’t like, it’s enough for me to not purchase it again. Anyway, let’s dig in!

The Cult classic purifying face cleanser

The Cult classic purifying face cleanser 3.2 star rating

As you would expect, a cleanser is meant to get rid of any makeup or SPF you’re wearing and just overall clean your face. Tula’s The Cult Classic Purifying Face Cleanser contains a whole slew of different fragrances such as turmeric, lemon, blueberry and green tea - I unboxed this little kit eager to try the cleanser - I was rather disappointed.

I had makeup on and as I wiped off the cleanser with my face sponge, I expected to see all the residue of my makeup on it…but I didn’t. There was a small amount on my sponge and immediately I thought, ‘have I washed this off from my hands when I applied the cleanser?’. But that wasn't right because even though I had some residue on my hands, it wasn’t everything.

Wiping my face on my towel after, makeup was coming off and it was still coming off when I used a bit of micellar water on a cotton pad - just to see if it would pull off anymore. My face also felt a bit tight after drying. In addition to not really cleaning my skin, the cleanser smells, in my opinion as best as I can describe it, like detergent. Even if I loved fragrance, I would want a nice smell, coconut or vanilla perhaps - not something that reminds me of washing my clothes, it’s very clinical. Not for me.

So polished exfoliating sugar scrub

So polished exfoliating sugar scrub 3.3 star rating

Ironically enough, the best part of Tula’s So Polished Exfoliating Sugar Scrub is the smell - pineapple and papaya! It smells like you just took a mini vacation to Aruba and not your bathroom sink. The scrub in general is okay, it didn’t wow me, it felt nice but I’m not sure how well it exfoliated my skin or improved my pores. It says to use it 2-4 times a week but It’s quite a small size, 11g to be precise - which maybe gives three uses? (that’s a guess) definitely not a big enough size for the price paid.

24-7 moisture, hydrating day and night cream

24-7 moisture, hydrating day and night cream 3.8 star rating

Tula’s 24-7 Moisture, Hydrating Day And Night Cream is their top selling product and I can see why it works well as a moisturizer. Containing apple, lemon and chicory - the smell in my opinion is barely noticeable in this one. It helps give a boost of hydration to dry or tight feeling skin, I haven’t personally noticed any brightening benefits but it does what it says - moisturize. One thing I did notice, the tub came kind of half empty. The product inside was pushed to one side and at first I thought it may have been because it was in the box - not the case, you don’t get a full tub of product - not good for the price paid.

Brightening treatment drops, triple vitamin C serum

Brightening treatment drops, triple vitamin C serum 3.2 star rating

The award for the smallest product in this kit goes to…the vitamin C serum. At 7ml, it honestly feels like a sample size - not travel size. If you use 2-3 drops as it says on the product, it won’t last very long. Having said that, I do like the fact that it has 10% triple VItamin C which really helps tackle any dull areas and helps reduce signs of hyperpigmentation. I need a bigger size to really see the difference in reducing the appearance of my sun spot but I can see a very small subtle improvement. Again the smell..as my boyfriend said ‘smells like glue’. What is happening? It says it has Mango and Lychee extracts - maybe my sense of smell is off but I can’t smell that!

Tula Skincare - The verdict

The kit retails for $49 (£43) and to be honest for the price, I was expecting to get slightly bigger products. Two out of four definitely felt more like samples than travel size. Considering their full sized products aren’t on the budget friendly side of your wallet, you would hope you get enough product in the kit in order to make a decision on whether you want to invest in purchasing the full size of the products you like.

As already mentioned, the smells are quite clinical and this actually resembles their packaging. Packaging doesn’t have to be fancy at all, it has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the product. I just think for the cost of the products the packaging could be better. Out of these four products, what would I use again? The moisturizer. I haven’t tried anything else from their range, I might but I’m not in a rush. Do I love TULA skincare as much as I love Toulla from My BIg Fat Greek Wedding..not yet.
