Oily skin..the glow that just keeps on giving, sometimes giving a bit too much! That’s not a bad thing, we just need to know how to manage it, what products we should use to help control the shine and to minimize it. Dealing with consistently oily skin can require a whole host of different products, including the never ending use of blotting papers.

There can be external factors that contribute to the excess sebum produced such as producing more sweat. Once the sweat starts to mix in with the oil - you get that shiny complexion. Although sometimes, just like we are born with our natural hair color, some people are born with more sebaceous glands than others, thus resulting in an overproduction of oil.

We naturally produce oil, this is what keeps our skin soft but too much of it can sometimes make our face look very greasy. Did you guys know that even our hormones can contribute to oily skin? Sebaceous glands are quite sensitive to androgens such as testosterone - what does this mean? The more androgens in your blood, the more they bind to your sebaceous glands and viola - excess oil!

What is the best face wash for oily skin?

The best face wash for oily skin will be those that contain salicylic acid. Why? This type of acid is famous for its ability to really get stuck into pores and it exfoliates the skin. It works by targeting and breaking down dead skin cells - it gets rid of them! In addition to that it also removes the excess oil that builds up and clogs up the skin and pores. If you don’t try to tackle that you can end up with acne and breakouts.

By using this type of acid it can help prevent blackheads from forming, which is quite a common concern for those with oily skin - it is definitely one of my top skin concerns!

Niacinamide may just become your bestie when dealing with your pores, it works very well at not only reducing the look of pores, it can control excess oil. Another product that helps oily skin is retinol - known to shed your dead skin cells which in turn clears your clogged pores as well!

We can’t physically shrink the actual size of our pores but products that contain these ingredients can definitely help minimize the appearance of them. With those ingredients and effects in mind, my number one recommendation for the best face wash for oily skin is Tatcha’s Deep Cleanse, with OLEHENRIKSEN’S, Find Your Balance™ Oil Control Cleanser and INKEY list’s, Salicylic Acid Acne + Pore Cleanser close runners up.

What is oily skin?

Oily skin occurs when the sebaceous glands in the skin make too much sebum What’s sebum? It’s that waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin. What's the issue with that you might say? Well although it’s important in keeping the skin healthy, too much of it can cause clogged pores, acne and yes you guessed it - oily skin!

Now I know I definitely have combination skin, I have had my fair share of sebaceous glands get so clogged up that some of them have ended up looking like mount everest on my face. My pores - another skin concern of mine definitely gets worse because they get clogged up from the sebum, causing blackheads too - think I'd rather have one big spot that eventually goes away than a whole sea of blackheads on my face.

How to manage your oily skin?

To tackle oily skin and keep it at bay, it all starts with getting the foundations right, if you don’t it will just end up being a constant battle.

Shiny oil 1 - You 0

Managing oily skin requires a consistent skincare routine, once you find what works - stick to it! If you only stick to it for a while and then get a bit lazy (I’ve been there) you end up undoing all your hard work. There is nothing better than seeing the improvement in your skin when you give it constant love and TLC.

Best face wash for oily skin conclusion

There are various different products that help with oily skin but it all starts with your face wash! We can’t ‘get rid’ of our skin type but we can help improve it and having a face wash that suits your skin type, is the first step in the right direction.
