Seasonal skincare tips
Just because there are four seasons, it doesn’t always mean you have to change up your entire skincare routine four times in a year.
I mean who would have the time or money right?
That being said, there are some small seasonal skincare changes that we might make according to the season because our skin may need it because of temperature changes.
Our skin changes throughout the year, which includes changes that may happen because of the weather and certain products can be swapped out to adhere to those skin changes.
🌷Spring skincare routine
Ah we’ve finally escaped the frosty bitter weather that comes with winter and the beautiful weather of spring arrives, daisies included.
Just like you change your heavy coat to a lighter coat, the same applies for spring skincare swaps.
If you are wondering what I am on about, let me break it down:
Switch your heavy moisturizer out for a lighter moisturizer.
Exfoliate and then exfoliate again - get rid of any dry or dead skin cells left over from the dry winter months.
Maintain hydration with your serums like Hyaluronic acid.
Elevate your SPF game - SPF is not seasonal however UV rays are stronger in warmer months so daily application is essential.
☀️ Summer skincare routine
Finally good hot weather, your sandals and sunnies are out - but do they start to slide down your nose quite quickly?
I’ll tell you why - we can produce more oil than usual which leads to clogged pores.
Here’s a few things we can do in the Summer months:
Switch your heavier moisturizer to a lighter and non-comedogenic moisturizer, this will help any build up of clogged pores caused by the increased heat and humidity.
With the weather warming up our skin can get oilier and to avoid acne and our pores clogging up, use a gel based or exfoliant cleanser to help remove dead skin cells.
Upgrade to a higher SPF (if you haven’t already). We are exposed to more sun and the UV rays are likely at their highest - SPF everyday.
Introduce a hydration mist - this is optional.
Use products that are rich in antioxidants, this helps keep our skin protected from damage and premature aging as we spend more time outside.
Pigmentation and skin discoloration can occur in the summer months or worsen if you already have some marks (my cheek one is a permanent resident these days) - use a correcting serum.
🍁 Fall skincare routine
You’ve packed your summer clothes away and it’s the start of the cozy season, the air is crisp but not too cold, you can still wear your sunglasses and leather jacket with your cute boots.
What changes to your skincare routine come in the Fall?
You can swap out your light moisturizer for a richer or heavier cream should your skin need it.
In the summer a more robust cleanser should be used to cut through all the sweat and waterproof SPF, come Autumn you can switch to a more creamy cleanser.
I’m not really swimming or at the beach this time of the year so I swap my waterproof SPF to an everyday sunscreen but still SPF 50!
If your skin is a bit more on the drier side, it’s optional but you can introduce a facial oil for extra nourishment.
Exfoliate - get rid of dead skin cells that have a habit of accumulating in the colder months because of drier skin.
❄️ Winter skincare routine
The wooly hats and gloves are out, you’re excited to get to the Christmas markets to get your waffles and hot chocolate - one of my favorite times of the year. What’s not my favorite, is just how cold it can be.
The blustery wind in my face is not fun.
In the winter, there is a change in humidity, we go in and out of the cold and exposure to indoor heaters can all wreck havoc with our skin and make it feel drier and look duller - my skin looks quite dull in the winter months.
Use creamy cleansers, avoid any that will strip your skin.
Switch to a richer moisturizer and consider using a protective balm.
SPF - yes even in the winter.
Consider using skin barrier products for that extra protection.
Continue using antioxidants for protection and to brighten.
Final seasonal skincare tip
Alexa Tip 💡
You know your skin type and your skin best, you may not have to make any changes at all and that’s okay. Just remember to pay attention to how your skin reacts and adjust as and if needed.
You don’t need to create a different skincare routine everytime the season changes.
Depending on your skin’s needs you may swap a few products out for other more suitable ones or you might not need to do anything at all.
However, if you ever find yourself with any skin changes because of the weather and season change, then I hope this guide is helpful.
