I don’t know where or what I was doing in life before I discovered cleansing balms, I may or may not have been living under a rock - who knows! Nonetheless I haven’t looked back since the world of cleansing balms have graced my ever so crowded skincare shelf - I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Cleansing balms are one of the most effective products you can use in your skincare routine - nothing gets makeup off like it!
Both Elemis Pro-Collagen cleansing balm and e.l.f makeup melting cleansing balm claim to break down SPF and make-up and at present I am alternating between the two. Mainly because the Elemis balm I have is a travel size and if you know how expensive it is, you would know that I'm trying to make it last! And the e.l.f balm is a full size at a more affordable price point. This has given me the ability to compare the two quite well so, $59(£46) v $13(£10) - let’s go!
Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm
Elemis pro-Collagen cleansing balm is a cult favourite by many but for $68/£46 you might be thinking is the hype worth it? It’s yellow colour grabs your attention, don’t worry it doesn’t leave your skin looking yellow! It is enriched with starflower and omega oil, rose and mimosa wax and it does have a fragrance which I am personally not a fan of - that’s fragrances in products in general for me! The whole vibe of the product does give off relaxing mini spa treatment and in your own bathroom, that’s a bit cute.
The balm instantly melts into an oil on contact with dry skin, which then emulsifies into a cleansing milk and in seconds you have panda eyes. That is truly the test of all tests with cleansing balms - if it can get off your tough mascara, you have a winner. I am here to say Elemis does just that and I wear some thick foundation as well. It does leave a greasy residue which is why I always use a face sponge to wash it off with.
My skin didn’t feel dry or tight, it was soft which is what we want. A little goes a long way so some would say the price point is worth it because it would last a while, however this can still be difficult to justify spending nearly $68 on a product that you are quite simply watching swirl down the drain.
Pros
Deep cleaning - takes make up off really well
For all skin types - non irritating/striping
Skin didn’t feel dry or tight
A little goes a long way
Cons
Contains fragrance
Leaves a greasy residue
Very expensive
e.l.f Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm
One of the things I love about e.l.f’s cleansing balm is that 1. It barely has a fragrance so it is kinder to my eyes and 2. It is packed with ceramides and hyaluronic acid - we all love a bit of hyaluronic acid. The balm has a translucent colour melting into an oil dissolving all of my make up and again I use a face sponge to wash it off.
The fact that it has got a very light scent which for me is barely noticeable is a big green flag for me. Fragrance is a common irritant on the skin, the lack of it means it would be unlikely to cause any irritation - winning. My skin also felt soft after using it, thankfully, no fear of your skin feeling tight or dry just because you are using a cheaper product. I did have to double cleanse over my eyes which I guess isn’t ideal but for less than half the price of Elemis I don’t mind taking the hit. I found that a little also goes a long way so I’d estimate it lasting a fair while!
Pros
Non irritating
Skin felt soft after using it, no tightness or dryness
A little goes a long way
Very low price
Cons
Requires a double cleanse over eye makeup
Slight fragrance
Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm V e.l.f Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm Summary
I have been tempted to purchase the Elemis cleansing balm and truth be told, I put it off because of the price point. I received a travel size in a goodie bag from an event I went to, this is why I love samples and travel sizes - so we can try! Now that I have had the chance to try it - I do like it and enjoy using it but e.l.f has the edge for me - it doesn’t have hardly any fragrance which is gentle on my eyes too. Plus you can buy 4 tubs of e.l.f cleansing balm for the price of 1 Elemis balm!
